Manipur CM assures justice in recent killings

Imphal, Sep. 6 (EMN): Condemning the alleged sexual assault of a minor girl who later succumbed to her injuries and killing of an ATM cash loading staff in broad daylight, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday assured punishments to the involved persons at the earliest so that such incidents do not recur in future.
Addressing a press conference in Imphal, Singh said that the police have arrested six suspects in connection with the alleged sexual assault case of a 14-year-old girl at Mayang, Imphal and her subsequent death on September 3.
Singh also said that dedicated efforts would be put into file charge-sheets against them in less than two months under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
Informing that INR 5 lakh would be provided as ex-gratia to the victim’s family, Singh also expressed gratitude to the people for extending cooperation to the police in nabbing the suspects.
On the Churachandpur incident wherein unidentified miscreants killed an ATM loading staff while robbing INR 1 crore 15 lakhs on September 4, he also informed that three suspects have been picked up for questioning so far and investigations are going on with good progress. The victim of the Churachandpur incident was Arambam Ranjan (37),a resident of Zoveng Khuga Tampak in Churachandpur.
Stating that he had talked to the wife of the victim over the phone and assured justice, he said that he had also instructed DGP Manipur to visit Churachandpur to supervise ongoing investigations.
He said he had asked the DGP to cull information from the militant groups in the district which are presently undergoing Suspension of Operation with the governments.
He assured that the government will take up steps to provide all necessary assistance to the victim’s family as per existing rules.
Earlier, volunteers of Khuga Tampak Youth Association and women folks took out a protest rally on September 4 night and demanded justice. The Meitei Society Churachandpur also condemned the Churachandpur incident and urged the authority to find the culprits and award befitting punishments. It may be mentioned that employees under All Manipur ATM service sector have threatened to cease work from September 10 if the accused persons in the Churachandpur incident are not arrested by September 9.
