Manipur CM assures inquiries to violence

IMPHAL — Manipur Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, on Saturday informed that two separate magisterial inquiries would be conducted into the violent incidents in Churachandpur and at Manipur Police Training College, Pangei, and 5th IRB Chingarel, both in Imphal East.

Addressing a press conference at his official secretariat in Imphal this evening, Biren Singh said actions would be taken according to the law.

Terming the incidents as unfortunate, he said the government condemned the incidents.

“It is the primary duty and responsibility of the government to maintain law and order, protect public property and lives,” Singh said adding that legal action has been initiated against an individual who issued a threat on the SP of Churachandpur on social media.

On the report of serving 24-hour ultimatum to the SP Churachandpur by the ITLF (Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum), he stated that threats on law enforcing agencies and government officials would not be taken lightly.

On the report of firing at Sugunu area in Kakching district, Singh stated that he had instructed the senior police officials to inspect the activities in the area and take up necessary steps.

He also highlighted that the financial assistance of INR 1000 per individual to 59,800 individuals for those staying in relief camps have been sanctioned for the third time. He added that financial assistance for the conflict affected farmers have already been sanctioned and released.

Assuring that the government will soon provide alternative accommodation for those in relief camps, he appealed to stop the activities like monetary demands, disturbances to developmental projects and extortion etc. by taking advantage of the ongoing conflict situation.

Ministers of Works, Govindas Konthoujam and Water Resources, Awangbou Newmai along and MLA Th Shanti Singh of Moirang were also present during the press conference.
