Manipur celebrates inclusion of ‘Manipuri Nat Sankirtana’ in Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage

Imphal, Dec. 4 (EMN): Manipur celebrated the inclusion of “Manipuri Nat Sankirtana” in the Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, on Wednesday at the Banquet Hall, 1st MR in Imphal.

The programme was jointly organised by the Intellectual Forum of North East, department of Sankirtana, Manipur University of Culture, department of Dance and Music, Manipur University, and Manipur Citizen Forum.

Speaking as the chief guest of the event, Governor Dr. Najma Heptulla said the state-level committee of the Nata Sankirtana has been observing ‘Sankirtana Day’ in the state to celebrate Sankirtana music.

The governor said that the rich cultural heritage of Manipur is well recognised by the Unesco and highly regarded in the international arena of culture.

Stating that Manipur is best introduced to the world through its rich performing arts and culture, she said the Manipuri dance is not the art of Manipur alone but the country’s too as a whole.

She said artistes from the state have performed many shows within and outside the country and brought commendations from various foreign countries.

Prof. N Lokendra Singh of Manipur University and president of the NE India History Association spoke on the topic ‘Safeguarding and Promotion of Sankirtana.’

During the occasion, gurus were felicitated for their dedication in safeguarding and promoting Sankirtana of Manipur.
