Manipur: Capacity building on biodiversity underway

Senapati, May17 (EMN): A three-day capacity building on biodiversity got underway for the Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) of Senapati district in manipur.

International Biological Diversity Day is scheduled to be held across Manipur on May 22.

Divisional Forest Officer D John Sha inaugurated the training programme at the district rural development agency hall, 60 km north of Imphal.

In his inaugural speech, DFO stressed on the need for conserving rich biodiversity of the state and Senapati district in particular by active participation of the stakeholders.

Appealing to the participants to preserve different medicinal plants found in the region, the officer encouraged them to sensitise the villagers about the importance of preserving the biodiversity for sustainable livelihood.

Range Officer Lolee Leshiini Kriibve Mao of Senapati Forest Division, in his keynote address said that BMC is the driving force in conserving, and restoring the natural resources.

In the technical session resources persons including an environment journalist and president of the Green Hills Society shared their observations on biodiversity scenario in the state and people’s response to the degrading ecosystem.  They urged the committee to revive and protect the environment.

The participants also visited the Forest department’s Orchidarium and Arboretum at Khonghampat in Imphal west district.

Representatives from 24 selected villages under Senapati district bordering Nagaland attended the training programme.
