Manipur: 4 houses washed away in flash floods

Jiri River in Manipur washed away four houses besides submerging many houses in Jiribam district, which borders Assam’s Silchar district, due to incessant rain since the past one week.

Four houses at Kamranga locality, located about 4 km east of Jiribam police station, were washed away on Sunday.

Many houses in Kamaranga, Islamabad, Kalinagar, Champanagar, Ningthembam and Leingangpokpi have been submerged and the affected families are taking shelter at safer places, a resident of Champanagar said.

On the other hand, with the sudden rise of water-level of Kongba River, habitation and agricultural fields of Khabeisoi area in Imphal East district were also submerged on Tuesday.

Earlier, due to the sudden rise of the Barak River water level, a large number of settling areas and agricultural fields in Tamenglong district were also submerged. The affected villages and localities are Lungphambut,Taniangpangjang,Khangtyiap,Tamalairam,Rengdailu Pouram, Namthuanpouram, Aboukhuakpiram, Gwaijei-Khoubank, Guipuang-Jeijaeng, Gwangh-Kaijaeng, Khangchiuluan, Chilean, Duigailong, Thiulon, Bamgaijang, Inrianglong, Namtiram, L Pabram, Saramba and Vachengphai.

The water level of Imphal River, Nambul River and Nambol River are still flowing at warning levels as rainfall continues in their catchments. Many low lying areas of Imphal also continue to be submerged due to lack of proper drainage system.

Kangpokpi, the birth place of Imphal River, received rainfall measuring 23mm on Tuesday while Saikul witnessed rainfall of 16mm, as per Water Resources dept. report.

On Thursday, the Imphal-Jiribam sector of National Highway 37, the second life line of the state, had been cut off after a bailey bridge over Irang River collapsed while the Manipur-Mizoram route had also been cut off after the newly built diversion road was washed away by rain on Wednesday.
