Manipur: 1 killed, 4 injured in IED blast

Imphal, May 30 (EMN): A construction worker was killed and four others were injured when a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) exploded at a community hall in Thoubal district of Manipur around 1:30 am on Monday, police said.

The construction workers were staying at the community hall and were involved in the construction of a water supply tank.

The injured were rushed to Thoubal District Hospital, where one of them, Pankaj Mohato (21) succumbed, while the others have also been identified as Aroop Mandal (30), Apoorva Mandal (25), Rajesh Ramaanik (19) and Souvik Patra (18).

No individual or armed groups operating in the state have claimed responsibility for the incident so far.

On hearing the news, a police team led by SP Jogeshchandra Haobijam rushed to the explosion site and inspected the situation. Police said that the reason behind the explosion was not known immediately and that forensic and bomb disposal teams have inspected the explosion scene.

The official-in-charge of Khongjom Police Station informed that they have registered a case and began the investigation.

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters on the sideline of an event, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh condemned the incident and assured that necessary steps will be taken up.
