TUENSANG— Nagaland Police has arrested a 26-year-old man from Assam on charges of abducting a 22-year-old girl from Tuensang on pretext of marriage.

Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Tuensang, Manish Bhartiya told journalists at a press conference on Wednesday that a family from a village in Tuensang made a verbal complaint with the Tuensang Police on June 15 about the missing girl, following which a suo moto First Information Report (FIR) was registered after an initial inquiry.

After gathering relevant details from the victim’s family, the cyber cell and technical experts started a “secret mission” and traced the whereabouts of the accused and the victim. Under the direction of Superintendent of Police, Kanchan Kumar Kandpal, Tuensang Police co-ordinated with the Assam Police and apprehended the accused from Barpeta district of Assam, said the police officer.

‘A team of five members led by PSI Toshi started the rescue and arrest operation on June 18 and returned to Tuensang on June 21 after three days of continuous travel. The victim is now safe and in good health. She has been reunited with her parents after completing formalities, while the accused has been arrested and forwarded to the judicial authority,’ said Bhartiya.

The accused has been booked under section 365 and 366 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), he added.

According to sources, the victim was taken to Assam seven months ago by the accused, who was working in Tuensang as a businessman, after luring her to marry him. However, upon reaching Assam, her family could no longer get in contact with either of them.

It turned out that the girl was beaten up on several occasions and taken hostage by confining her to one room.

Meanwhile, SDPO Bhartiya urged the citizens of Tuensang to approach the police for any complaint so that they can provide all possible help or contact Tuensang Police Station Helpline: 6009308128 for emergency cases.
