LSU asks woman candidate to withdraw nomination

DIMAPUR — The Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) has asked Hayina Tungoe, intending candidate from ward no. 1 of Bhandari Town Council (BTC) election under Wokha district, to withdraw her candidature.

The decision to this effect was taken during its meeting with all the Lotha frontal organisations held at Merapani village council hall on June 17.

The LSU president, Lirhonthung E Kithan, and general secretary, Chanpenthung Ovung, in the circular, expressed displeasure over Hayina Tungoe for filing her nomination despite an appeal was made know in public domain following the press statement issued by the Naga Student’s Federation (NSF) on May 11, 2024.

According to LSA, after careful review on Hayina Tungoe, it was learned that she has been married to an individual who is not an indigenous Naga and which does not aligned with the culture expectation of the union.

The union stated that it upheld the culture and social values that are intrinsic to the identity and unity of the Naga people. The union further requested all concerned citizens to refrain from supporting non indigenous Naga candidates in future to protect their identity.
