DIPHU — Longsing Ronghang, aged 52 years is the new Karbi traditional chief (king). He was inducted as the new king during a coronation ceremony held at his residence at Rongchingdon in Hamren on Wednesday. Hamren is 140 KM from Diphu.

Longsing Ronghang was inducted as the 36th Karbi traditional king following the demise of the previous king Ramsing Ronghang on May 10 this year.

The new king is the son of late Lindok Ronghang, former Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and mother late Kakrung Teronpi.

He is married to Ruplin Teronpi.

The coronation procedure was done by the Pinpomar (courtyards) including Dili, Senot, Miji and Pator who came down from Ronghang Rongbong, the seat of Karbi traditional chief. The Dili, Senot, Miji and Pator are the representatives of the four houses of Lindokpos i.e. Ronghang Lindok, Rongchaicho Lindok, Rongpi Lindok and Killing Lindok.

The coronation ceremony was witnessed by important dignitaries led by Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang.

The tradition of preserving the traditional chief (king) is still prevalent in the Karbi society.

According to the customs followed at Ronghang Rongbong, when a king is dethroned or passes away, the Pinpomar goes to find a new candidate from amongst the Ronghang Hempi, a sub-clan of Ronghang to succeed the throne.

After the candidate agrees to take charge of the king, he then goes to Ronghang Rongbong to tell his willingness to the Pinpomar. Preparation for the coronation/installation of the new king then starts.

Following the coronation ceremony, a feast was held on behalf of the new king.

The CEM said it is a great moment and privilege to witness the coronation of the new Karbi traditional king, a symbol that even today the Karbis are still intact with their own culture and tradition.
