Longleng observes culmination of 16-day activism

DIMAPUR — Longleng district administration, District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) and Sakhi-One Stop Centre (SOC), in collaboration with the Phom Students’ Conference (PSC) observed the ‘Culmination of 16 days activism-cum-Human Rights Day’ at the DPDB hall on December 9 on the theme “Unite! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls.”

The introductory note was delivered by SDO (Civil) and nodal officer of BBBP/ DHEW, Meyazungba Jamir, wherein he emphasised the importance of non-violence against women and children. He urged women and the youth to understand and exercise the rights bestowed upon them by stating that “Ignorance of the law is not an excuse.”

Angbhenla Phom highlighted the absence of harassment, violence or ignorance of women and children in Phom culture in the olden days. She however lamented on the growing incidents of violence against women and girls in the present era.

She encouraged women and children to consult or report problems to higher authorities if they face harassment. She added that every individual has the right to be informed about their rights and duties.

A song was presented by Hela Jaa Wung.

The highlights of the programme included administering of the pledge on ’16 days of activism against gender-based violence’ by case worker of OSC Longleng, Shandimoinyei A Phom.

Apart from department officials, members from Phomla Hoichem, wards of Longleng town, PSC, church leaders, Longleng district legal service authority, Women Police Cell, District Child Protection Office, and Asha and Anganwadi workers attended the programme.
