Longleng DLSA:Students face off in Fundamental Rights essaying

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 10: On August 9, a college-level essay competition based on the Fundamental Rights and duties of citizens was organized by the Longleng District Legal Services Authority with the assistance of Yingli College authorities and faculty members. The event was conducted at Yingli Government College of Longleng district. The program was to promote awareness and a clear understanding about the various rights and duties among the younger generations included in the common plan of Action for 2016 of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority, the organizers said in a press release to the media on Wednesday. The legal service group is under the department of Justice & Law. The chief judicial magistrate, also secretary of Longleng District Legal Services Authority, Victo Sema addressed the students before the start of the competition. He apprised the students of Yangli College on the salient features of the various rights and duties of citizens as enshrined in the constitution of India. Sema also spoke about the need to enforce the Right to Education which he said was a fundamental right. Longleng district is also a ‘pilot district’ in the state and identified to implement the flagship program, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojana. The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojana is a government of India Program managed by the Nagaland State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW). Panel lawyers and para legal volunteers under the Longleng District Legal Services Authority are deployed in all the sub-divisions to ‘spread awareness and ensure various provisions of women’s right, protection, welfare and available benefits,‘ the organizers stated. The winners of the essay competition will be adjudged and also awarded certificates along with cash prize ‘in time to come,’ the organizers informed. The essay competition is part of the Legal Services Activities program set by the National Legal Services Authority with the objective to create and spread legal awareness targeting the future generations at school and college levels. “The district legal services authorities in the state are instrumental in ensuring and extending such programme on legal literacy and education on basic laws and rights at school and college levels empowering the future generations with the knowledge and power of law,” the press release stated.
