KOHIMA — Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday urged political parties to uphold the dignity of legislative institutions by ensuring the smooth and orderly functioning of the Houses.

Addressing a press conference in Kohima on Monday, Birla stressed that democratic spaces offer ample room to raise concerns and debate policies through structured, informed and peaceful discussions.

Planned disruptions, he cautioned, undermine legislative processes and deny citizens meaningful deliberation and accountability.

Referring to the Winter Session of Parliament beginning on December 1, he appealed to parties across the political spectrum to work toward uninterrupted proceedings.

Legislatures, he said, must play a more constructive role to strengthen transparency and support welfare-driven policymaking.

He added that the central and state governments have collaborated on development initiatives in the region despite various challenges.

Birla also highlighted the growing national and global demand for organic and indigenous products, noting that the Northeast is well positioned with its agricultural produce, local industries and artisans. He said that these sectors need stronger platforms for marketing to help increase farmers’ income.

The Speaker also called for a comprehensive action plan for the holistic development of the Northeast.

He underscored that such a plan must specifically address emerging climate risks, including natural disasters, which have a profound impact on the region’s livelihoods and infrastructure.

Stressing the importance of sustainable and inclusive growth, Birla said that development strategies for the Northeast should integrate climate resilience, green infrastructure, and active community participation to ensure long-term progress.
