Dimapur, April 24 (EMN): The department of Linguistics and Centre for Naga Tribal Language Studies (CNTLS), in collaboration with University of North Texas, USA, organised a two-day international workshop on ‘Language documentation and annotation’ at Nagaland University.
The workshop began with an inaugural programme with Prof. AK Mishra, pro vice-chancellor of Nagaland University, Kohima campus, as the special guest and Prof. Shobhana Chelliah, University of North Texas, USA, as the main resource speaker, informed an update from CNTLS.
It stated that Dr. Imlienla Imchen, assistant professor of CNTLS, chaired the programme, while Dr. Pangersenla Walling, associate professor and HoD of Linguistics, delivered the welcome address.
In her keynote address, the resource person emphasised on the importance of language documentation and data archiving. She added that a whole team of people was required to document a language, not just a linguist.
She also added that archiving data digitally is important as it makes it easily accessible to all the people and community. She also stated how archiving data digitally could help preserve both language and culture of a community permanently. She further encouraged all the participants to come onboard for language preservation as it is important in many aspects.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. L Bijenkumar Singh, assistant professor of CNTLS, NU.
