Life in a garbage dump

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]e all tend to comment on the poor quality of sanitation which gives vent to pollution which in turn vitiates the atmosphere and thus affect our health in general.
To cite one prime example is Dimapur and its suburbs, which have become a world class slum-type of commercial hub of the State. Go to any locality and no matter where, there seems to be no sanitary measures being practised, but there is an open air lavatory in some corner or the other.Cross the over-bridge from NST station to Hong Kong market area, get down the spiral cemented stairway and you will see people of all kinds of men answering the call of nature, and that too, right behind the backs of a police squad on duty. Go along the way with the extended wall of the railway station boundary and the sight will sicken you. Also, in the same area, there are piles and piles of rotting vegetables. The Municipal trucks load up with whatever garbage they carry and it is true that there are sweepers who do clean the streets but some things apparently are way beyond them also.
This is just to cite one instance. In fact, there are some residential areas which have no provisions for proper toilet facilities when construction of the buildings first began. This was not so much due to saving costs but that basically, Nagas originate from such open air backgrounds in the rural areas that the idea of convenient toilet facilities do not cross our minds. But is not now the age of enlightenment in practically every aspect of life!
We have numerous aspects to not only complain about but address to resolve as well. After clean water, good air sustains life. Good efforts would all be in vain if the air we breathe is polluted. Spare a thought.
