FOR the first time ever, Legal Aid Clinic Cell attached to the Sub Jail in Zunheboto was launched by the chairperson of District Legal Service Authority Zunheboto (DLSA) and District Session Judge, Khesheli Chishi Swu, under the aegis of DLSA Zunheboto on April 11.
Khesheli Chishi, in her short speech, has lauded the Zunheboto Sub Jail authority and her junior colleagues and staff for the accomplishment to set up the Legal Aid Clinic Cell. She also exhorted the 23 inmates of their rights and exphasised on self sustenance, rehabilitations and post parole endeavours.
She has appointed two volunteers from the jail authority and district judicial respectively to monitor, supervise and address the complaints and problems of the inmates at regular intervals.
Advocate Katovi Awomi, speaking on the occasion as the resource person, has highlighted detailed note on: Right to legal aid – its history, aims and objectives to the inmates. He also briefed on “Para legal volunteers” across the land.
Senior citizens, economically weaker sections of the society, victims of natural calamities, ST/SC community(s), beggars and other poor and helpless individuals who cannot afford lawyers etc are entitled to free legal services by the respective DLSA.
Senior Superintendent of Jails, KK Awomi, has lauded the DLSA Zunheboto, district administration, police department, Zunheboto Sub Jail personnel and several others for the cooperation, maintenance of law and order which had led to the smooth functioning of the Sub Jail, Zunheboto. Awomi maintained that the Sub Jail Zunheboto has no records of jailbreaks, violence amongst the inmates or casualties for a long period of time. He highlighted that “the contemporary jails are not primarily or exclusively for the punishments against the crimes committed but jails are presently a place for reformation, transformation and rehabilitation etc”.
Civil Judge, OP Phom delivered a keynote address and APP Zunheboto also spoke at the gathering.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by advocate Anne Sumi, member DLSA, and began with an invocation prayer by the jail Chaplain. The District administration, Police personnel, DBs, Judicial staff, DPRO staff, Red Cross Society, Consumers Rights Forum, frontal NGOs, elders and several others from different walks of life attended the programme.
