One Direction have a legion of loyal followers across the globe but it seems rock royalty Jimmy Page isn’t one of them.
The 71-year-old guitarist for Led Zeppelin spoke about the boy band’s ‘manufactured’ sound on Sunday while promoting a new deluxe edition of the group’s sixth studio album, Physical Graffiti, produced by the icon.
Chatting to Weekend Sunrise’s UK Entertainment Reporter Steve Hargrave, about the 40th anniversary re-release, the musician confessed he wasn’t a fan of the current pop-culture phenomenon.
‘It’s not really my cup of tea – you know, it’s sort of more manufactured,’ Jimmy told Steve.
‘I’d prefer the sort of thing you’d go and see live with musicians playing live, that’s where I come from, that’s the sort of thing that made me want to play in the first place,’ the guitarist added.
Led Zeppelin had a plethora of hits in the seventies including Stairway to Heaven, Kashmir and Black Dog, as well as a series of record breaking tours right across the globe.
But the UK rockers split following the death of drummer John Bonham in September 1980 and only briefly reformed for a sell out tribute gig at London’s O2 Arena in 2007, with John’s son Jason filling in for him on drums.
Despite the show being hailed a great success, with fans travelling from around the world for the concert, the veteran rocker admits the band are not likely to reform and tour like fellow rock legends The Rolling Stones.
‘That’s so long ago now [the O2 show] and there hasn’t been any overtures to do anything else,’ Jimmy began when asked if a rumoured rift with singer Robert Plant was keeping the band from getting back out on the road.
‘So I don’t really want to be talking about anybody else,’ he continued.
‘I’m really more concerned now with making sure that I do something, rather than just sort of waiting around for other people to make their minds up,’ he added sternly.
While Led Zeppelin only toured Australia once, back in 1972, Jimmy told the Aussie breakfast show’s correspondent that he’s keen to head back Down Under, should his solo project pan out as planned.
‘When I have a project, which I hope to put together later this year at some point, then we’ll see,’ he said.
‘It’d be fun to play in Australia, I enjoyed it,’ Jimmy added with smile…and a Whole Lotta Love.
During the exclusive London interview, the UK television personality tried to impress the legendary rock star with some impromptu air guitar.
While it mildly amused the musician the loveable larakin’s performance didn’t quite land him a spot in the band.
