IMPHAL, April 5 (EMN): The incident took place when a major portion of village including the road connecting other parts of the state, measuring around 150 ft slides down in the middle of the Sirarakhong village about 90 km north of Imphal under Litan Police station, around 2 this afternoon. According to the villagers, landslide occurred on the eastern side of the village locality called Sira tang near the new village playground landslide. Sirarakhong village is known for its famous chilies.
This is the first time that the state witnessed a massive landslide after weeklong rain in the state which had already witnessed a record intense rainfall after a gap of 62 years which cause widespread flooding in many low lying areas of Imphal areas including the historic Shree Shree Govindajee temple and roads leading world’s oldest living pologround here. March 31's rain fall crossed 100 mm within 24 hours which is record after 1954, according to Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Lamphelpat sources.
Meanwhile even after the rain stops on Wednesday, some of the low lying areas including those in Imphal areas are still under flood water. Even the place such Nagaram which lies under Manipur Chief Minister N Biren’s Heingang assembly constituency is also still under flood water. It may be mentioned that a large area of crops land are also severely affected due to the flash flood in the state. As a result many farmers are facing untold misery as more than 40 hectares of potato farms at their Eshikha farmland in Manipur’s Imphal East district are under flood water.
