Several unoccupied plots of lands are being washed away as heavy mudslides continued till this evening. At the same time, the affected residents have appealed to the government to immediately despatch an inspection team to take stock of the grave situation of the residents stated a release.
For the past many months, conditions of several houses in the residential pocket had been liable to potential landslides, after threatening cracks developed across some homesteads in the colony due to gradual landslides last monsoon.
Rain water had been seeping into the cracks making the ground soggy and sudden overflow of drain water due to blockade of drain of the road has washed away huge portions of homesteads on the slopes of the Western Circular/GREF Road on Tuesday night in Ukhrul district.
“On hearing some sound amidst heavy rainfall, I rushed outside to find the road turned in to a riverbed with overflow of drain water,” said a resident Florence Mangkung. Huge portions of the homestead of Khaivarentang and others villages have been washed away by the water current, and the dwelling house plummeted to a depth of 2/3 feet below the ground in some area.
“We tried till late night to stop the water cascading down our homesteads by lining up boulders along the roadside.” It continued till morning and when we got up, we found my house structure sunken about 2/3 feet below the ground said one of the residents.
Since last monsoon, cracks had appeared across our homestead due to slow moving landslide, and we managed to mend it with earth, she said adding that this time as torrential rains continued, situation is getting worse.
Another resident Zingthan Varam said that his house had been affected since last year due to landslides and cracks that appeared on his homestead has widen this time. Even the road and culvert in front of my house are showing signs of potential breakage in the event of continuing rainfall in the next few days, he said.
