IMPHAL — A long-standing land dispute between two Tangkhul Naga villages in Manipur’s Ukhrul district erupted in violence on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including a Manipur Rifles personnel, and injuries to approximately 20 others.

The confrontation between groups from Hunphun and Hungpung villages began around 10 am near Viewland Church in Ukhrul town, escalating into an exchange of gunfire. Around 20 injured individuals were initially taken to nearby health centres for treatment. Later, ten were transferred to hospitals in Imphal, with eight reportedly discharged, police sources said.

Fearing further escalation and a breach of peace, the sub-divisional magistrate of Ukhrul issued an order prohibiting movement outside residences and any activities that could disrupt law and order in the designated “neutral zone” between Thingrasa and Ngaphar. The order came into effect at 9:30 am on Tuesday and will remain in place until further notice.

In response to the violence and casualties, the Manipur Home department ordered a temporary suspension of internet and mobile data services, including VSATs, broadband, and VPN services, within Ukhrul district. The suspension, effective from 1:20 pm on Tuesday, is for a duration of one day, subject to confirmation within 24 hours. Exemptions are in place for lease lines and FTTH connections to the offices of the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police, or in cases where the state government grants specific exemptions.

The ban on mobile internet services in Ukhrul was implemented around 3 pm, according to residents.

Following the incident, three MLAs representing Ukhrul district’s assembly constituencies—L Keishing (Phungyar), Kh Vashum (Chingai), and Ram Muivah (Ukhrul)—issued a joint appeal for peace and restraint.

“Let us not allow this moment to shatter what generations have built. No victory can be found in the pain of our brothers and sisters. Let us pause, reflect, and remember that our strength lies in unity, not division,” read the appeal.

The MLAs called for dialogue and an amicable resolution to the land dispute, while expressing their condolences to the bereaved families.

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee  president K Meghachandra also expressed concern and sorrow over the incident.

Meanwhile, police sources confirmed that a mob stormed the Ukhrul Police Station, seizing over a dozen weapons, including automatic rifles.
