Land dispute claims one life in Manipur

  • IMPHAL — Violent activity over an alleged land dispute between Shangching village and Lungreiphung Tang in Manipur’s Ukhrul district that occurred on Thursday afternoon resulted in one death and injuring five others, forcing the district authorities to issue prohibitory orders.

  • The deceased has been identified as 36 year old Ramyon RK from Shangching village, according to people familiar with the matter. The injured persons are identified as Aron RK (36) who sustained bullet injuries to the left side of his chest, Joseph RK (54) on his right side of head, jaw and left shoulder and Peter RK (73) on his back of head. All three hail from Shangching village.

  • Two other injured persons from Lungreiphung Tang have been identified as Rejoice RK (34), who received bullet wounds to his arm and thigh, and Ningshang RK (60), who was hit in the head and stomach.

  • The injured were given first aid at the Assam Rifles post at Shangshak and those with critical injuries were later rushed to Imphal for further medical treatment.

  • The condition of the injured person in Imphal was said to be serious. The exact cause and details of the incident are still unclear.

  • In view of the development, the additional district magistrate, Polly Makan, has imposed prohibitory order under Section 163 BNSS at the disputed area under Shangshak police station in Ukhrul district to prevent further escalation. The order prohibits any person from leaving their residence or engaging in activities that could disrupt the prevailing law and order in the scheduled area, effective from 2:30 pm on April 17 until further notice.
