Lakhera inaugurates ‘Nokzar Ao Memorial’, felicitates war veterans, veer naris
DIMAPUR — Maj. Gen. Vikas Lakhera, Inspector General (IG) Assam Rifles (North), and Kika Sangla, mother of Late Rifleman (General Duty) Nokzar Ao, jointly inaugurated the ‘Nokzar Ao Memorial’ on Tuesday at Mangmetong village, Mokokchung district.
According to an update, the memorial was built in memory of Ao of the 12 Assam Rifles, who was martyred on April 14, 2009, in Chassad, Manipur, for which he received the Police Medal for Gallantry posthumously.
The memorial was inaugurated in the presence of his family members, village council members, Assam Rifles personnel, and villagers, according to the statement, adding that a village road was also named after the fallen hero as ‘Nokzar Ao Road’.
At an event commemorating the occasion, village council members, family members, and IGAR spoke about the braveheart’s life and supreme sacrifice.
Felicitation of 1971 war veterans and veer naris
On Tuesday, in another event, as a tribute to those who fought in the 1971 Indo-Pak War, Lakhera, accompanied by Brigadier Herjinder Singh, Commander 5 Sector, and Commandant 45 Assam Rifles, felicitated 14 bravehearts and one veer nari (Nchmoni Lotha) in Wokha.
On the occasion, the Inspector General, Assam Rifles (North), expressed gratitude to the veterans, acknowledging not only their indomitable spirit and contributions to the 1971 War but also their role in the development of Naga society. The interaction concluded with the distribution of essential items.
Friendly volleyball matches
On Monday, the Assam Rifles held friendly volleyball matches in Jotsoma village in Kohima district; Piphema and Kukidolong villages in Chumukedima district; and Nihoku village in Niuland district to commemorate Army Day.
The matches featured participation from the locals and the initiative aimed to promote sports and wellness among the youth while also raising awareness about the significance of Army Day.
