DIMAPUR — The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Phek, ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, organised a kisan gosthi at the KVK Phek premises at Porba, Phek, on Thursday.
According to a press release, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Singh, senior scientist and head of KVK Phek, emphasised the importance of kisan gosthi and the conservation of traditional seeds in the National Gene Bank on the occasion.
Wekoweu Tsuhah of the North East Network (NEN) Chizami encouraged farmers to make the best use of the KVK and stressed the importance of combining traditional farming knowledge with scientific farming methods. She also emphasised the importance of waste management for a greener environment at various levels throughout the community.
Lupfusie Pojar, assistant soil conservator, Meluri, briefed on the various activities that are being carried out, such as the soil testing facilities and soil health cards that are issued by the department, as well as activities such as the water harvesting pond, bench terracing, and contour terracing that are being implemented in the district.
Nezulu Nyekha, executive director of Chakhesang Women Welfare Society (CWWS) Pfutsero, enlightened the farmers on the status of the food processing industry and encouraged them to target the global market through value-added products, stating that the district is naturally blessed for growing any crops.
Dr. Hannah, chief technology officer, agronomy, KVK Phek, talked about improved technologies in agriculture and various agri- and allied enterprises such as sericulture, nursery raising of high-value crops, and floriculture that can be taken up by the farmers for year-round income.
Dr. Ragul Raj, senior technical officer, NRCM Porba, elaborated on Mithun farming care and management practices such as timely vaccination schedules, deworming, providing balanced nutrition, and so on, and emphasised the importance of value-added products of Mithun.
Altogether, 70 participants from seven villages participated in the kisan gosthi, namely Porba, Pfutseromi, Phusachodu, Thipuzu, Kikruma, K Basa, and Zelome.
