
Resource persons and participants pose with vegetable seed
kits distributed by ICAR-KVK at Kukheqwo village, Meluri district, on April 23.
- DIMAPUR — The Indian Council of Agricultural
Research (ICAR)-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Phek, conducted a training
programme on productive and sustainable agriculture under natural farming on
April 23 at Kukheqwo village, Meluri district.
- According to an update, the objective of the training was to
raise awareness among farmers about the latest technologies and scientific
methods in natural farming.
- Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Singh, senior
scientist and head of KVK, delivered a lecture on the topic "Farmers' role
in the conservation of plant genetic resources”.
- He highlighted the significant contribution of the farming
community in the Northeastern region towards conserving local seeds. He also
raised awareness about the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights
Act (PPVFRA) and encouraged farmers to register their varieties under the Act.
- Dr. Hannah Krujia Asangla, Chief Technical Officer
(Agronomy), delivered a talk on "Income-generating activities in
agriculture," emphasising various opportunities for enhancing farm income
through the management of crops under natural farming. Dr. Harini KR, Subject
Matter Specialist (Animal Science), gave lectures on "Pig management"
and "Management of backyard poultry”.

- The technical session was followed by a farmer-scientist
interaction, where farmers shared their experiences and raised issues related
to agriculture.
- Thuputhiyi Venuh, who coordinated with KVK Phek to organise
the programme, enlightened the participants on the village's potential under
the Look East Policy and the ongoing technical support provided by KVK.
- As part of the programme, vegetable seed kits developed by
KVK were distributed to all participating farmers to promote the development of
nutri-gardens.
