KVK organises training for farmers

DIMAPUR — Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Dimapur, has organised a field day on potato under ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, at Dhansiripar on February 20.

An update from KVK Dimapur stated that the programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Homeshwar Kalita, head of ICAR, Nagaland centre, with an objective to make the farmers aware of good planting material of potato and to increase area under scientific potato cultivation as well as improve productivity.

It added that Dr. Phool Kumari, senior scientist and head of KVK Dimapur, discussed about the scenario of potato cultivation in Dimapur conditions and encouraged the farmers for large scale production as it has better market prospects being an important vegetable crop in the district.

Report also stated that Dr. Bendangla Imsong, chief technical officer (Plant Breeding), shared on scientific cultivation techniques of potato, while Dr. Moanaro, programme assistant, spoke on pest management in potatoes.

It informed that potato tubers received under ICAR- Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, NEH component, were distributed to the farmers.

A total of 20 farmers participated in the programme.

In another programme, KVK Phek organised an exposure-cum-hands on training for progressive farmers of NICRA villages under Phek district from February 14 to the 16th.

During the programme, the farmers visited ICAR-NRC on Mithun, ICAR-RCNEHR, Nagaland Centre, and Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH) in Medziphema and Konger Agritech Pvt Ltd., in Dimapur.

On the first day, Dr. Kobu Khate, CTO, and Dr. Lozo, YP-II, from ICAR-NRC on Mithun briefed about the importance of Mithun animal and also visited different activities carried out at the farm.

On the second day, Dr. Azeze Seyie, scientist at ICAR, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema, explained the cultivation of vegetable crops and spices which was followed with field visit to shade net unit, modern nursery unit etc. It stated that Dr. Mahak Singh, scientist at ICAR, RC-NEHR, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema, spoke on poultry and piggery animal health management.

On the same day, a hands-on training on grafting of fruit crops and nursery management and horticultural crops was demonstrated by Anjani Kumar Singh, horticulture specialist at CIH, Medziphema.

On the third day, Aochetla Longchar, mushroom expert at Konger Agritech, imparted knowledge to the farmers about the importance of Shiitake mushroom and oyster mushroom. The farmers also visited mushroom laboratories and practical session was demonstrated on oyster mushroom.

The group was led by Keniseto Chucha, farm manager, and Veralu Hesuh, YP-II at KVK Phek.

Altogether, 20 farmers from K Basa, Thipuzu, Kikruma, Pfutseromi and Phusachodu villages participated in the exposure-cum-hands-on training programme.
