KVK Longleng conducts training on cultivation of oilseed crops
DIMAPUR — ICAR-KVK, Longleng, organised a day-long training programme on ‘Sustainable practices of oilseed crops to manage resource depletion’ on Friday at its office premises in Longleng town.
The programme was organised under the leadership of Dr. Lily Ngullie, ACTO Animal Science and head of KVK (in-charge), Longleng.
An update from KVK Longleng stated that Dr. Kalu Ram, SMS (Fruit Science), coordinated the training programme. He also spoke in detailed about the importance of oilseeds cultivation, nutritional benefits, different types of oilseeds, import and India status of oilseeds and its cultivation practices during the technical session.
It mentioned that oilseed crops are mostly grown for the purpose of extraction of edible vegetable oils. The diverse agro-ecological conditions in the country are favourable for growing all the annual oilseeds including groundnut, rapeseed-mustard, soybean, sunflower, sesame, safflower and niger, and also non-edible sources namely castor and linseed.
In order to increase the domestic production of oilseeds and reduce the import bill and make the country self-reliant in vegetable oil, the availability of improved production technology and its adoption, expansion in cultivated area, price support policy, information and awareness about the sowing methods, association of KVK in technology transfer and institutional support are needed.
Around 40 farmers attended the programme in presence of Dr. Pallabi Phukan, SMS (Social Sciences); Yuimi Raising (Agri. Extension); Shubhendu Kumar Behera (Plant Pathology); and Kumari Pallavi, SMS (Home Science).
