DIMAPUR — Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kohima, conducted a training-cum-potato tuber seed and farm machinery distribution programme at the KVK campus sponsored by ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, as part of the North-eastern Hill (NEH) component on November 10 and 11.

During the programme, a total of 8,000 kg of potato tuber seed variety Kufri Jyoti, 10 paddy threshers, five power-operated winnowers, and 15 wheel hand-hoes were distributed to various targeted villages through farmer producer organisations, farmers’ clubs, women’s clubs, and self-help groups in Tseminyu and Kohima districts.

According to a press release, the programme was chaired by Dr. Shisarenla Aier, subject matter specialist (SMS) (Horticulture) and nodal officer of the NEH Programme, KVK, Kohima, who discussed the significance of the crop, citing that potato, a major crop and staple food source for many households, plays an increasingly important role in food security for the growing population.

Therefore, she said, introducing improved potato varieties would enable greater yields and significantly reduce the risk of crop failure, which would substantially boost the economy and improve the standard of living of the villagers.

Dr. Martina Shitri, asst. chief technical officer (Plant Breeding and Genetics), KVK, Kohima, trained the beneficiaries on potato cultivation practices, including seed treatment, sowing, critical stages of crop development, crop harvesting, and seed preservation for the following season.

Imtinuksung, SMS (Soil Conservation), emphasised the importance of land preparation, the incorporation of organic manures, and the use of mulching in potato cultivation for better crop growth and yield.

Hands-on demonstrations of the operation of manually operated paddy thresher, power-operated winnower, and wheel hand-hoe were also given to the targeted groups in order to start custom hiring centres at a low cost for the benefit of farmers and to generate income.
