KVK Kiphire empowers women through farming

Dimapur, Dec. 15 (EMN): Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kiphire, in collaboration with the Kiphire district administration, Mahila Shakti Krendra (MSK) and DRDA, conducted a training-cum-input distribution programme on “Empowering farm women through improved agricultural practices for livelihood generation.”

An update from KVK Kiphire stated that the training was conducted for Longmatra and Sitimi blocks from December 7 to the 11th.

It stated that the resource person and NSRLM area co-ordinator, Sepila Sangtam, spoke on value addition in agriculture and horticulture crops where the surplus produced could be further processed and earned additional income instead of wasting them. She has particularly focussed on ginger, gooseberry and wild apple, which are abundantly available locally.

She has explained in detail about the process and ingredients involved in making ginger, gooseberry, wild apple candy and also gooseberry wine. While emphasising importance on value addition, she encouraged the women farmers to take up such activities to enhance their income and livelihood.

Another resource person, Temjenna Jamir (SMS, DAMU KVK Kiphire) delivered lecture on integrated pest and disease management in important crops, where the use of yellow sticky traps, pheromone traps, neem oil, use of trap crops were encouraged to the farmers. 

Besides, an awareness on the new Farm Act 2020 was also explained to the participant in a nutshell. Farmers were also highlighted the importance of minimum support price during the training programme.

The report stated that a total of 120 women farmers were selected from 24 SHG groups from each block covering a total of 10 villages from Longmatra block and 14 villages from Sitimi block. Inputs comprising of yellow sticky traps, garden rake, maize sheller, neem oil and knapsack sprayer were also distributed to all the farmer participants.
