Kumram village in Manipur becomes a model village under SAGY
IMPHAL — Kumram village under Phungyar sub-division in Manipur’s Kamjong district was on Tuesday launched as a model village under the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) by Lok Sabha MP (Outer) Dr. Lorho S Pfoze.
Kumram is the first ever village to be developed as a model village for the district.
The launching programme, organised by the District Administration Kamjong, at the Kumram village playground on Tuesday, was attended by Phungyar K Leishiyo, Deputy Commissioner Rangnamei Rang Peter and village headman N Isaac.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Pfoze instructed the District level officers (DLO) to play their roles effectively in developing Kumram as a model village. He said that each household should have a good sanitation system, good power and water supply, health and hygiene, and that all children should be educated with a good education system including smart classes. He said to attain the ‘model village’ goal all the villagers should undergo a change in their attitudes in becoming ‘model citizens’ to other villages and to the rest of the state and the nation.
Dr. Pfoze also appealed to the villagers not to resort to poppy and ganja cultivation for easy money and keeping in mind the harm it will do to the future generations, and urged not to degrade the natural ecosystem and environment.
Local MLA Leishiyo expressed his gratitude to the MP for selecting Kumram from all the rest of the villages in the hills to develop as a model village. He said Kamjong is a very vast district of around 2400 sq km but with little population of around 50,000 and all the parts of the district still remain very backward and there is not a single urbanised village yet. The MLA also expressed his wish of creating a special economic zone (SEZ) in consultation with the state government in one of the areas of Kamjong.
Trees plantation, opening of new building of the Kumram Primary School and unveiling of plaque were the main highlights of Tuesday’s function which was marked by cultural dances and entertainment programmes.
