Diphu, Jan. 23 (EMN): Demanding the state government and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) for introduction of Science and Commerce stream in different colleges of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong district, Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) Samson Teron faction on Jan. 22 burnt the effigies of Assam Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma, Hills Area Development (HAD) minister, Jogen Mohan and Chief Executive Member of KAAC, Dr. Tuliram Ronghang at Dongkamukam town in West Karbi Anglong.

The protest took place after the introduction of Science and Commerce stream to 10 colleges in Morigaon, Baksa, Cachar and other parts of Assam which was announced during the Cabinet meeting held at Circuit House, Haflong, Dima Hasao on Jan. 19.

During the protest, student leaders asked the authorities not to play with the indigenous people in the name of politics while demanding provision of proper education for the hills area. The student organisation demanded that Science and Commerce stream must be introduced in different colleges of West Karbi Anglong and Karbi Anglong since many colleges in the district lack the said courses.

Informing the media KSA President, Samson Teron said, ‘We have burnt the effigies to protest the issue of numerous memorandums submitted to the state and KAAC government for introduction of Science and Commerce in colleges (West Karbi Anglong)’.

Teron also said that Karbi Anglong district is one of the oldest districts in Assam without even a single Science and Commerce college in West Karbi Anglong till date. Since there are no Science colleges, students enroll only in the Arts stream.

The organisation therefore, demanded for the issue to be addressed as soon as possible. Failing to do which, more democratic movements will follow
