“Historical records and oral traditions speak of alliances, cultural exchanges, and even matrimonial ties that strengthened connections between the hills and the plains. Notably, the marriage of an Ahom king to Watlong Anghya of the Konyak tribe further reinforced this relationship, fostering harmony and cultural enrichment that continues to inspire us today,” it read.
The occasion was a tribute to the legacy of Joymoti and a reaffirmation of unity and peace among communities. The union stated that in today’s time, when divisions often challenge harmony, such commemorations remind that true strength lies in understanding, respect, and solidarity.
It added that the coming together of the Ahom and Konyak communities sends a message that their shared history binds them, and their future calls for collective progress.
The KU president made an appeal to the younger generation, stressing their role as custodians of this shared heritage and torchbearers of the future. He stated that the legacy of friendship, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence between the Ahom and Konyak peoples has been nurtured over centuries, and it is a collective responsibility to preserve and carry it forward.
The union further urged that the spirit of unity should extend beyond such occasions and be reflected in all spheres of social, political, and economic life. By choosing dialogue over division, cooperation over conflict, and peace over discord, it stated that the communities honour the sacrifices and vision of their forefathers and lay a strong foundation for a harmonious future.
