Konyak civil society organisations have appealed to all political parties, candidates and their supporters to refrain from using ‘underground elements’ or resort to any form of violence during the 2023 Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) elections process.

The general election to the 14th NLA will be held on February 27 before the votes are counted on March 2.

The Konyak Union (KU), Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) and Konyak Students’ Union (KSU), in a joint communiqué, also urged all ‘Naga National Political Groups’ and their cadres to refrain from directly involving in political activities of the state election or threaten the voters for their “vested interest”.

“The use of such tactics not only violates the law, but also threatens the safety and security of citizens, and creates an atmosphere of fear and intimidation that can compromise the ability of people to participate freely in the election,” stated the communiqué.

Those found responsible will be held accountable for their actions, and shall be answerable to the Konyak CSOs, it stated.

Further, the Konyak CSOs endorsed and empowered all federating units, sub-ordinate bodies and village councils, “to implement and act upon the communiqué to ensure that the election is free, fair, and transparent, and that all citizens have the opportunity to exercise their franchise in a safe and secure environment”.
