Dimapur, April 2 (EMN): The Konyak community in Dimapur on Saturday celebrated the Aoleang Monyu festival at Konyak Community Centre in Purana Bazaar, with thousands of people, including the invitees joining the festivities.

Minister of Environment, Forest and climate Change, YM Yollow, who was the special guest for the occasion, shared that ‘the festival is about inviting married sisters, aunts or women married to other tribes, and celebrate with their parents’.

He informed that people used to observe the occasion at different time and different places until the Konyak Students’ Union fixed the date for the festival from April 1 to the 6th in 1960.

He went on to say that the cultural songs and dance performed during the festival is not only about victories but also of failures.

Speaking at the event, former MP Wangyuh Konyak said the festival used to be celebrated for six days after completion of seed sowing. It marks the end of the old year and onset of a New Year, he added.

Cultural troupes from nine constituencies performed during the celebration.
