Kohima, June 24 (EMN): Having experienced a hassle-free traffic movement for three consecutive days following the introduction of odd-even system in the state capital, order to prevent movement of non-essential vehicles, Kohima police has decided to continue the same in the next few days.
On June 19, senior superintendent of police, Kohima, Kevithuto Sophie, had issued an order stating that odd-even system would be implemented for movement of vehicles in the interest of public safety and to minimise non-essential movement of vehicle. Accordingly, the road was closed on alternate days to vehicles with odd and even registration numbers.
On odd days, vehicles bearing registration number ending with 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, would be allowed to ply, while on even dated days, vehicles with even numbers 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 were permitted to ply.
The new traffic rules have eased normal traffic congestion in Kohima.
On Wednesday afternoon, it took less than ten minutes to travel from police headquarters junction (BOC area) to main town (Old NST). On normal days, prior to odd-even system, it takes nearly an hour or over to travel the same distance.
The SP, on Tuesday, lauded the public for co-operating and adhering to the odd-even rule. Since it’s a new rule, those who come out without knowing the system, are directed to comply with the rule, he said.
The order came into effect on June 22 and would continue till June 30 except on June 28 (Sunday) in all areas within Kohima municipality.
