Kohima Municipal Council will elect new leaders after its chairperson and deputy chairperson resigned citing medical reasons, officials said.

KOHIMA — Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B Henok Buchem, on Thursday confirmed that the chairperson and deputy chairperson of Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) have resigned, citing medical reasons.
Speaking to media persons at his office chamber, the DC said that the resignation letter of the chairperson was received on January 17, while that of the deputy chairperson was received on February 10.
Neikhozo Suokhrie from Ward 18 (Paramedical Colony) and Khrielievi Chusi from Ward 17 (Agri, Electrical and Forest)—both councillors of the then Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (now Naga People’s Front)—were serving as chairperson and deputy chairperson respectively at the time of their resignation.

Buchem informed that, as per provisions of the Nagaland Municipal Act, a 15-day notice was issued to the deputy chairperson on January 27, and the matter was forwarded to the department of Municipal Affairs on February 11 for final orders, which are still awaited.
Regarding the chairperson, the DC said that a 15-day notice was issued on February 12, and after the mandatory period is over, the district administration will forward the matter to the department for further action.

Both the chairperson and deputy chairperson cited medical problems as the reason for their resignation, he added.
Once the department of Municipal Affairs issues a notification declaring the posts vacant, the councillors will elect a new chairperson and deputy chairperson.
