The Kohima Municipal Council transports 11 tons of refuse-derived fuel waste to Meghalaya for scientific processing.

DIMAPUR — Deputy Chairperson of the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) Thenusou Sekhose, along with Assistant Director of SBM under the Urban Development Department and High School Ward Councillor Kelhousenuo Khruomo, and KMC officials and staff, flagged off the first consignment of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) waste material from the KMC Dumpsite Legacy Waste Remediation Project on May 17.
According to an update, in compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules of India, a total of 11 tons of RDF waste material has been commissioned for transportation to UMSO Mootang, Thangskai, Khelerihat, East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, under the free of cost material category for scientific processing and utilisation.
The legacy waste remediation initiative, undertaken under SBM-U 2.0, was launched with the objective of remediating 40,250 metric tons of accumulated legacy waste and reclaiming approximately 1.4 acres of dumpsite land. The project now stands in its final stage of completion.

KMC has further appealed to all citizens to cooperate in preserving the reclaimed site by strictly refraining from unauthorised dumping of waste.
“Public participation and responsible waste disposal practices remain crucial in sustaining a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally responsible Kohima,” KMC noted.
