Meriema youth withdraw proposed government vehicle ban after authorities assure time-bound NH-2 repair works following consultative meeting in Kohima
DIMAPUR — A proposed ban on the movement of government-registered vehicles through Meriema village has been withdrawn after Kohima district authorities, PWD (National Highways) and the project contractor assured the village youth organisation that long-delayed repair works on the NH-2 stretch would begin within days.
According to a DIPR update, the breakthrough came during a consultative meeting convened by Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B Henok Buchem, on Monday to address a representation submitted by the Meriema Village Youth Organisation (MVYO), which had threatened to stop government vehicles from entering the village from July 1 over the deteriorating condition of the highway. The organisation had alleged that repeated appeals since March had failed to elicit meaningful action from the authorities.
The meeting, held at the DC's office, was attended by officials from the district administration, PWD (NH), representatives of contractor M/s Nitin Sai Construction and members of MVYO.

During the discussions, the youth organisation highlighted the poor condition of the highway, citing incomplete works, inadequate drainage, uncleared debris and prolonged delays in execution despite repeated representations.
The executive engineer of PWD (NH) informed the meeting that proposals for repairing the sinking stretch had already been submitted and that the work order for the affected section was expected to be issued on June 30.
Representatives of M/s Nitin Sai Construction acknowledged that while some works had been undertaken, the project remained incomplete. The contractor committed to begin mobilising materials by July 2 and resume work immediately thereafter.
PWD (NH) further assured that repairs to the sinking stretch would commence by July 6, following the issuance of the work order.
It was also decided that the district administration and the MVYO would jointly monitor the progress of the repair works, while the department and contractor would coordinate closely to ensure timely completion.
In view of the commitments made during the meeting, the MVYO agreed to withdraw its proposed restrictions on the movement of government-registered vehicles within Meriema village jurisdiction.
