Dimapur, Sep. 21 (EMN): A Malayan night heron (Gorsachius melanolophus) was handed over to the Kohima Forest Division by one Vesato Theluo on Tuesday.

An update from the department informed that the bird was rescued from the premises of RDNÜMS at Old Ministers’ Hill in Kohima on the evening of September 19 and released on Tuesday in the presence of range forest officer, Kohima Range, Pezaneinuo Chielie, and other staff.

The range forest officer also mentioned that it was the third case in a span of three years. The first reported case was on November 18, 2020, and second on October 6, 2021.

“Globally, this species is found in southern and eastern Asia including India. Though the population trend is not yet known, however it lies between 2000 and 20,000 and its classification status by IUCN is under least concern (LC),” it stated.
