Kohima finally gets smart: NH to open, old vehicles to get scrapped

Due to the “increasing traffic congestion“ in Kohima town, the district administration of Kohima has ordered commercial establishment, such as saw mills, timber, sand and bricks, cement, hardware and cement “stockist” on National Highway-2 and National Highway-61 within Kohima town area “shall be permitted only where there are adequate parking space for loading/unloading without disturbing traffic flow.”
This decision was taken by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) of Kohima, the deputy commissioner, Rovilatuo Mor, said in a note on Wednesday.
The order added that the trade licence of shops not having adequate space shall not be renewed henceforth.
Old vehicles to be phased out
Also the deputy commissioner stated in a separate notification that the Regional Transport Authority of Kohima has decided that all public transport vehicles beyond the age of 15 (fifteen) years shall be phased out from operation within Kohima Municipal jurisdiction.
“In this connection, renewal of the licenses shall be banned w.e.f. 1st April 2016 for the above mentioned category of vehicles inclusive of heavy/medium/light commercial vehicles. The notification was issued in the interest of public safety under the provisions of Sec 59 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988,” the administration stated.
VCM proposals
The district administration has also informed that the last date for VCM proposals has been to extended to March 15. “Villages that are yet to submit the VCM proposal for government approval have been directed to submit on or before 15thMarch 2016, failing which all government schemes/funds/financial transactions would be stopped,” the administration has stated in another notification.
