Kohima DMA clears disaster response agendas

The members met to discuss various issues concerning the administration of the district’s disaster response mechanism and associated activities, updates stated.[/caption] Dimapur, Oct. 17 (EMN): The Kohima district disaster management authority (DDMA) met on October 15 to discuss various issued concerning administration of the district’s disaster response mechanisms and associated activities, and matters about road clearance. The meeting was presided over by deputy commissioner of Kohima Gregory Thejawelie. The government publicity agency the department of Information and Public Relations (IPR) issued updates on Wednesday informing about the meeting. The group deliberated on a number of matters including reports from the line departments concerning damage from the monsoon. An executive engineer of the Public Works department for Vikeshe Yepthomi gave a report about the landslides that occurred at various locations during the past few months. Landslides at two locations near the old KMC landfill have been cleared while another is being cleared, the IPR stated. Likewise, widening and restoration works at Khuzama near the police check post are in progress while restoration works at three landslides areas, two at Phesama and one at Viswema, are on to allow traffic. He said that the department had been working on restoration, widening and fresh cutting of roads at the affected areas, the IPR stated. Another executive engineer, for Power, Rokongutuo Suohu, briefed the officials about the damage on utilities caused by the monsoon. Power supply has been affected in some areas in Kohima division due to power line interruptions at various locations, the IPR reported. He informed that the department has been working to repair and restore the damaged lines and posts. District forest Officer Rongsenlemla Imchen also gave a report. Her establishment and the Power department have ‘taken care of the damaged trees and restoration of power lines,’ the IPR reported. The Mechanical department also reported availability of machineries to be used in times of emergencies. The IPR reported that the officials deliberated also about ‘numerous request letters’ regarding felling of trees by government departments and its agencies and individuals and groups. The services of the ‘SDRF’ is utilised for execution of such related works. In this regard, the DDMA has decided to take the matter to the government for clearer directives regarding the guidelines for use of the SDRF services in order to ease the confusion among the public as well as to protect lives and property, the IPR stated. Further, the members of the DDMA discussed the Nagaland Emergency Preparedness Exercise (Nepex) for 2019. The officials were reminded about what the IPR described was a “table talk exercise” with administrative heads and heads of departments on October 24, followed by a “district level table talk exercise” on November 20, and the actual state wide exercise on November 21. The selected departments were also reminded to attend the “table talk exercise” at the ATI scheduled to be conducted on October 24, the IPR stated. In regard to the update to the India Disaster Resources Network, the line departments were requested to provide accurate information and data within a month accordingly as indicated in the given format, which is available on the website. On the issue of formation of village disaster management authorities (VDMA), the chairman informed that out of 95 recognised villages in the district, ten villages have formed the VDMA. In this regard, Thejawelie asked the administrative officers to initiate formation of the VDMA in their respective area including Kohima Sadar in order to have more comprehensive, efficient response network during emergencies, the IPR stated. On the matter concerning the proposed formation of ward disaster management authority/committee as submitted by the Kohima Municipal Council, the officials have decided to apprise the Home department about the matter ‘considering it mandatory in densely populated areas such as the town wards/colony,’ the updates stated.
