Kohima community, govt express unity to fight ‘Unwanted Elements’

Capital meets to curb violence

[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ollowing the recent series of blatant and audacious perpetration of violence in the state’s capital, Kohima town, the district administration and the town on Monday discussed ways and means to strongly curb the activities of perpetrators of violence. In unity, the civil communities of Kohima town, administration, and the police have resolved to fight all ‘unwanted elements.’On April 27, Monday, the district administration convened an emergency meeting with chairmen and leaderships of colonies, youth organizations and nongovernmental organizations in the Zonal Council Hall of the capital. The meeting was called in view of the prevailing law and order situation in the state capital and to ensure peace and harmony among the public.
Giving an overview of certain incidence that took place in Kohima in recent times, Deputy Commissioner of Kohima Rovilatuo Mor said that on March 25 four unarmed Assam Rifles personnel were ambushed by “unknown miscreants” near the IG Stadium. One of the soldiers succumbed to injuries in Kolkata.
Later, a series of bomb blasts occurred at Lirie and New Minister Hills on April 15 and the 16. As if they were not enough, on April 25 one member of the Assam Rifles was shot dead near the Classic Island Kohima.
The administrator said that such incidents, particularly of attacking security forces in the civilian areas, were a matter of great concern. The government of Nagaland needs the support and cooperation of the public to tackle this situation, he said.
Mor said that the authorities and youths of the colonies need to suggest how to take stock of such incidents and to give efforts to maintain peace in their respective areas.
The deputy commissioner also read out a resolution of the Lirie colony where every household has been urged to give strict vigil as a precautionary measure to guard against any situation that may be detrimental to the colony and the society as a whole. The resolution stated that any suspicious movement in any households in the colony should be brought to the notice of the authorities in concern.
Superintendent of Police of Kohima, Joseph Hesso also address the community and government officials. He requested that public to join hands with the police and the district administration to restore peace. He assured fullest assistance to the public in case of any untoward happenings.
The chairmen and leaders of the civil organizations present in the meeting also expressed strong concern at the recent law and order situation and felt the need to immediately take up appropriate steps to tackle the situation. They opined that the colonies should help and support each other so that timely intervention would thwart any untoward incidents.
In the meeting, the leaderships of all the 19 wards and colonies of Kohima town vehemently censured the recent violence and resolved to confront and fight the ‘unwanted elements; united. All the wards’s stakeholders also endorsed the statement of the Angami Youth Organization following the firing incident on April 25 in Kohima.
