Kohima College conducts awareness programme on road safety with an aim to promote responsible road behaviour and sensitise students, faculty and drivers on the importance of adhering to traffic rules to prevent road accidents.

DIMAPUR — Kohima College, in collaboration with the Kohima District Road Safety Committee (KDRSC), conducted an awareness programme on road safety at the college’s conference hall on Wednesday.
An update from the college stated that the event was aimed at promoting responsible road behaviour and sensitise students, faculty members and drivers on the importance of adhering to traffic rules to prevent road accidents. It stated that the programme was part of the college’s ongoing extension activities in partnership with civic and governmental bodies.
Khrieleü Zumvu, assistant professor of History and member of the college’s disaster management committee, welcomed the resource person and all participants including students, taxi, bus and private drivers, wherein she emphasised the growing concern over rising road accidents in Kohima. She highlighted the need for collective responsibility among citizens to ensure safer roads and lauded the collaborative effort between the college and KDRSC.

Delivering the introductory remarks, Khriezenuo Angami, associate professor of English and member of the college’s Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), stated that the event marked the first step in the college’s sustained collaboration with the KDRSC to enhance civic consciousness. She informed four locations in Kruleizüo Colony have been identified for installation of zebra crossings and other safety signage, reinforcing the programme’s practical commitment to improving road infrastructure and safety.
Delivering the keynote address, Solevi Metha, deputy superintendent of police (traffic), Kohima, discussed key causes of road accidents in Nagaland including negligence, over speeding and lack of awareness about road signs. He elaborated on traffic rules, importance of valid documentation, two-wheeler safety and aspects of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Emphasising discipline and civic responsibility, he encouraged students to become advocates for safe driving and pedestrian rights. It stated that his address was enriched with real-life examples and local case studies.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Vezhosa Ringa, associate professor of History and convenor of the college’s disaster management committee. He has appreciated KDRSC, resource person, faculty, students and the driver community for their active participation and valuable contributions.
It further stated that the awareness drive not only educated participants on vital aspects of road safety but also reaffirmed Kohima College’s commitment to community outreach, social responsibility and proactive civic engagement.
