Kohima, June 29 (EMN): A development indicator has identiied Kohima village in Kohima district and Chukitong village in Wokha district as two regions in Nagaland that have availed ‘maximum basic amenities’ while Metonger village in Kiphire district has availed the least of basic amenities. The village took only two basic amenities namely electricity and telephone service. Jenthy village and Ceoeyevong village both in Pungro block in Kiphire district, followed Metonger.
By availing 31 amenities, Kohima village and Chukitong took the maximum of basic amenities, according to statistics recorded in the Village Level Development Indicators (VLDI) prepared by the directorate of Economics and Statistics.The record was made available to mediapersons during observance of the 12th National Statistics Day on June 29.
The brochure contains information about the availability of basic amenities and surveyed in 1326 villages, in 75 blocks in 11 districts of the state as on March 31 2016.
According to the survey, Kohima district and Phek district on average avail the most of basic amenities in the state, while Longleng district and Kiphire district are two of those availing the least of basic amenities.
Out of 1326 villages in the state, 1325 (99.22%) villages have been electrified except for Aboiri village in Tamlu block in Longleng, the only village in the state without electricity.
The report stated that 644 villages were connected by road while 1317 villages by ‘unsurfaced’ road; some villages were connected by both surface and unsurfaced road.
Further, government transport facilities are accessible to 192 villages while 942 villages are accessible by private transport.
Out of 1326 villages in the state, the reports shows tele-communication service (mobile, WLL etc) coverage is 98.50% covering 1308 villages while only 18 villages are said to be without any means of telephone service.
Reportedly only 113 villages (8.2%) are availing internet facilities while only 296 villages (22.32%) are covered by postal service.
The report also shows poor basic healthcare amenities available in the rural areas. Only 18 villages (1.35%) have access to hospitals and veterinary dispensaroes; dispensary and sub-center in 494 villages having, Primary Health Center (PHC) in 170 villages and Community Health Center (CHC) in 52 villages.
With 94.94%), Anganwadi center is spread to around 1259 villages wherein 331 villages reportedly have Fair Price Shop. Besides, the report stated that 1190 villages have village community hall, 1184 villages have play ground facility and 434 villages with marketing shed.
Facilities provided by Public Health Engineering (PHE) are accessible to 677 villages as reported while 350 villages were maintaining public drainage system, 684 villages have proper footpath and 563 villages have public toilet system.
Tuensang district has recorded the highest number of block with 9 blocks with Peren district having the lowest with 4 blocks.
Kohima district: Kohima district with 7 blocks having 98 villages has 100% access to electricity, road connectivity, telephone service and government primary school. It has listed hospital, higher secondary school both government and private and community health centre as some of the least availing basic amenities in the district.
Dimapur district: The district has the highest number of villages in the state with 228 villages under 8 blocks. The district is said to have 100% accessibility in the areas of electricity and telephone service while hospital, village library and government means of transport were the least availing basic amenities in the district.
Mokokchung district: With 103 villages and 8 blocks, the district is availing 100% basic amenities of electricity, telephone service and road connectivity. Four villages in the district do not have GPS as per the survey. Some of the lacking basic amenities, it listed are hospital, CHC and higher secondary school.
Wokha district: Wokha district with 5 blocks and 147 villages also has 100% accessibility to electricity, road connectivity, private means of transport, telephone service, GPS and village community hall. Some of the least availing basic amenities are higher secondary school, hospital and internet.
Zunheboto district: With 179 villages under 8 blocks, Zunheboto district has 100% facility in the area of electricity. Zaphmi village is the only village in the district without telephone service and four villages, namely Lumthsami, Lumami, Khughoto and Punebooa do not have GPS. Some of the least availed basic amenities in the district are hospital, internet and higher secondary school.
Tuensang district: With the highest number of blocks with 9 blocks having 122 villages, all the villages under Tuensang district have access to electricity, road connectivity and GPS, while 17 villages are without telephone, service. The least availing basic amenities in the district are hospital, veterinary dispensary and government means of transport.
Phek district: Also with 99 villages under 8 blocks, the report indicates that all the villages under Phek district were electrified, connected by road, have telephone service, have GPS and village community hall. Some of the least available basic amenities in the district are Internet facility, hospital and higher secondary school.
Mon District: With 118 villages under 8 blocks, all the villages in Mon district have 100% basic amenities in the areas of electricity, telephone service and primary school. The district lack basic amenities in internet facility, hospital and higher secondary school.
Peren District: The district with a total number of 100 villages under 4 blocks has 100% availability of basic amenities in electricity, road connectivity, telephone service and government primary school. The district lacks in the areas of CHC, village library and higher secondary.
Longleng District: Longleng district with the least number of villages, 45 villages under 5 blocks have access to only to two basic amenities viz. road connectivity and telephone service. Abom village is the only village in the district without electricity while Aboiri village, Ametchong (UR) and Namching Compound do not have GPS. The listed lack of facilities is internet, higher secondary, CHC, hospital, veterinary dispensary and proper drainage system.
Kiphire District: Kiphire district with 87 villages under 5 blocks has 100% basic amenities in electricity and telephone service while four (4) villages, namely, Vongva, Ceoeyevong, Jenthy and Metonger do not have primary schools. Some of the least available basic amenities in the district are internet facility, hospital, and higher secondary and veterinary dispensary.
There is a need for a comprehensive database system as the government and the village communities continually strived to provide basic amenities to its people. The department hoped that the 10th edition of the report of VLDI will enable the planners to plan effectively by allocating scare resource of the state to achieve the desired plan objective towards inclusiveness, sustainable development and improvement of human well being.
