Kohima administration organises sensitisation programme

DIMAPUR — Kohima district administration, in collaboration with District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Kohima, organised an orientation and sensitisation programme at Government Higher Secondary School, Cheichama, on Friday.

Delivering the keynote address, Ane Khieya, EAC of Cheiphobozou, gave a brief introduction on the BBBP scheme and stressed on the need to empower the girl child in various aspects.

Vilezonuo Rhetso, advocate-cum-panel lawyer of Kohima DLSA, highlighted the POSCO Act and its various aspects like the definition of offences, reporting of offences, lodging FIR, counseling etc. She stated that it takes a whole community to protect a child, an update from the administration stated.

Dr. Akatoli, medical officer of Cheiphobozou PHC, gave an explanation on ‘sexual health, menstrual health and mental health.’ She also spoke on menstrual hygiene and advised the girls to abstain from early pregnancy. In regard to mental health, she urged the students to seek help and not to confine themselves.

She further called upon the girls to abstain from sex, suicidal thoughts, drugs, alcohol, tobacco and smoking.

Toli K Assumi, centre administrator of One Stop Centre (OSC), Kohima, highlighted on the scheme by emphasising on the issues faced by women and girls like domestic violence, sexual assault, cyber crimes and rape. She stated women and girls could avail services such as lodging FIR, legal assistance, medical care, counseling and temporary shelter.

The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) scheme was highlighted by Vidilhounuo Solo, DHEW specialist in financial literacy. Alemyapang Longchar, additional deputy commissioner of Cheiphobozou, thanked the resource persons and urged them to spread more awareness about the rights of the girl child. He also urged the teachers to spread the message to the students so that all the girl child could become truly empowered.
