Dimapur, Nov. 21 (EMN): The Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has reiterated that open burning of waste even during mass social work, including at landfill sites, is completely prohibited.

Administrator, KMC, T Lanusenla Longkumer, in a notification reminded that open burning of waste on lands, including at landfill sites, is completely prohibited under Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 and the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The notification also stated that the KMC is in the process of mitigating the KMC landfill (dump yard) of the existing deep-seated fire, which poses serious health risks to all citizens of Kohima and surrounding areas.

In view of this, disposal of waste has been shifted to an adjacent location in the same site.

“And whereas, it has come to the notice of the undersigned that time and again manpower attached to sanitation vehicles of wards/areas/villages/organisations are found to be setting fire to the new landfill,” it stated.

The notification stated that defaulters or violators will be penalised as per para 16 of the NGT in OA-199 dated 22-12-2022, and the sanitation vehicle of the particular ward/area/village/organisation to which the violator/s is attached will not be allowed to dispose their waste at the KMC landfill.
