Wokha, July 16 (EMN): Advisor of Information Technology and Communications, Science and Technology, New and Renewable Energy, Mmhonlumo Kikon, launched a book titled “Human capital, income and employment in Nagaland,” written by Dr. N Janbemo Humtsoe, at Don Bosco Youth Center in Wokha town on July 16.

Speaking at launch event, Kikon stated that Nagas need a platform to extensively discuss on the various issues and understand with factual data on issues. While discussions are held on various social media platforms, Kikon stated that those were made randomly or on one’s personal opinions which are not accurate. He opined that extensive social research has to be done at the grassroots.

Lamenting that Nagas are still not aware or understand economy and policies of the state government or India, he expressed hope that the book would help the people understand more on the issues, problem and challenges being faced by the society.

As Nagaland is a non-payer of tax which hampers in assessment of human capital income, Kikon felt that non-paying of tax states expecting welfare policies, financial from the government do not seemed right.

“A non-paying tax states demanding the rights of tax payer’s (state) rights are the issues which one need to discuss,” Kikon said.

He expressed that the book has extensively covered the present state affairs relevant to the state of Nagaland today with addition of new data and policies of the government as well as the government of India. He added that the book would help inform the policy makers with the current situation of the society.

He has called to change the outlook and dependency mindsets saying, social progress would be hampered as long as ‘our mindsets control the culture and society.’ He added that the society would never progress until we start to educate people on the values that one cherished.

Kikon also stated that meritocracy is the only way forward if the society wants to progress. In this regard, he stated that reservation and dependency on the politicians would only hold back the progress of society.

He further urged the congregation to read the book so they might have a wider knowledge saying it is the first important book written by a finest economist of the state with all required information.

Dr. N Janbemo Humtsoe stated that the book was an outcome of his Ph.D study on “Impact of human capital on employment and income – A comparative study of Wokha and Zunheboto district of Nagaland,” which was completed in 2018 from Nagaland University, Lumami. While stating that education has improved qualitatively and quantitatively over the years, he, however, felt an urgent need to improve various indicators including gross enrolment ratios, transitions rate, teachers training etc.

Pointing out at the poor performance of government schools with no sign of improvement despite numerous schemes and measures implemented both by the union and the state governments, he expressed that it is a serious deterrent for human capital development, which could have a significant impact on the growth and progress of the state’s economy.
