DIMAPUR — Sensing the need for a good learning environment, the Khiamniungan Students’ Union (KSU) went out of its way to construct a new classroom for students of Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) in Noklak.

Being the lone higher secondary school in the district, with no private schools and colleges for intermediate education, the Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) in Noklak witnesses high student enrolment, making it difficult for the existing classroom to accommodate all of them.

The students coming from various parts of the district had to be crammed in a classroom due to shortage of facilities in the school, so the KSU decided to construct a classroom for the school through community participation, the president of the union, Shangchiu Khiamniungan, told Eastern Mirror.

The student body felt the need to intervene in order to provide the basic necessity — a spacious classroom — for students from the area but not without apprehensions regarding the source of fund and uncertainty over community support. However, they received support from the public as well-wishers came forward to contribute for the project.

“We had utilised the KSU fund, received contributions from well-wishers, and it took us a month for the structure to come alive,” the KSU president said.

He said that the project was done through community participation with local construction workers building it by charging a minimum wage. He added that they did not approach the government for any assistance.

Khiamniungan went on to say that it was not KSU’s first initiative for the GHSS Noklak; the student body had earlier helped out the school by providing basic necessities the students require.

Providing more details about the new classroom, he said it has a seating capacity of 120 with a special space for physically challenged students to enhance their accessibility.

It can also serve multiple purposes, including holding events when required, he added.

The newly constructed classroom was inaugurated on August 22.
