Khel Maharan for Karbi Anglong district begins in Diphu

DIPHU — Khel Maharan for Karbi Anglong district began on Wednesday at Karbi Anglong Sports Association (KASA) stadium, Diphu. It is an initiative of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department of the Government of Assam to identify sports talents in the state.

For Karbi Anglong district, the event is being organised by the district administration and conducted by the district sports office. The competition will conclude on December 30.

It includes football, athletics, volleyball, Kabadi, and Kho Kho. The winning teams and individuals from the legislative assembly (LA) level are competing at the district level for selection in the state-level competition. Teams from the three LA segments participating are Howraghat, Diphu, and Bokajan.

Inaugurating the competition, district commissioner (DC) Madhumita Bhagawati said that the registration of players at the Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) level was 40,000, but 60,000 in the competition. She noted that after competing at the MAC and LA levels, the winning teams and individuals will be able to compete at the state level.

The DC also informed that the event will conclude on December 30, with Guardian Minister (HAD) Jugen Mohan and Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, attending as guests. Bhagawati described it as a talent hunt to find talented athletes at the grassroots level.

Rilip Ronghang, the district sports officer, also spoke on the occasion and extended his best wishes to the participants.

On the first day, athletic events were held for both boys and girls in the above 19 and under 19 age categories. In the evening, a boys’ football match was played in which Bokajan LA defeated Diphu LA by a score of 3-0.

The inaugural ceremony was also attended by Dr. Pankaj Teron, general secretary of KASA, and Kensing Engti, treasurer of KASA, along with other KASA officials.
