Kohima, Aug. 7: Rhitsho Mero scored a brace as New Market FC defeated Vanguard FC 2-0 to move above Khriekesa FC in third place at the 2nd Kohima Football League table on Tuesday.
With the win, New Market FC is now in 3rd place with 12 points and Vanguard in 5th position with 8 points in 7 matches.
Two woodworks and a missed penalty denied Vanguard FC the chance to move above New Market FC as Salu Kulim assisted two goals for Rhitsho to score a brace and finish the game for their team.
In the first half, Vanguard FC dominated the game in the midfield area but failed to breach the defensive line.
Vanguard’s best chance came through Nyithong as his shot hit the bar in the 18
th minute. Mathew Kezhose was culpable for not scoring in the first half.
Before the end of the first half, a brilliant crossed from Salu Kulim inside the area gave New Market the lead in the 40
th minute as Rhitsho seized the opportunity to score the first goal. The first half ended 1-0 in favour of New Market.
In the second half, Vanguard trying to get back into the game got their chance through a penalty in the 64th minute.
It was the skipper Yhunshalo Kemp who took the penalty but failed to convert as goalkeeper Lhiwete Koza managed to tap the ball out.
Achamo Shitio should have scored when Salu Kulim passed him a cross but he shot the ball wide in the 82
nd minute.
Salu Kulim was the man behind the score again as assisted Rhitsho Mero to head home the second goal in the 89th minute to make sure New Market get the three points.
