Keneicheno wins inter-school Mathematics competition

DIMAPUR — Keneicheno Rhütso of Mezhür Higher Secondary School won the first prize in the inter-school Mathematics competition held at the conference hall of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School in Kohima on Friday. The second and third prizes were won by Vileto Yhoshu of Ministers’ Hill Baptist Higher Secondary School and Meba Aihun Lating of Bethel Higher Secondary School respectively.

An update from Nagaland Science & Technology Council (NASTEC) stated that the inter-school Mathematics competition-cum-seminar was organised in continuation of the ‘National Mathematics Day’ on the theme “Mathematics for everyone.”

The event saw enthusiastic participation of 11 schools from Kohima namely Little Flower Higher Secondary School, Ministers’ Hill Baptist Higher Secondary School, Mezhür Higher Secondary School, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Baptist High Higher Secondary School, Khedi Baptist Higher Secondary School, Mount Hermon Higher Secondary School, Christ King Higher Secondary School, Vinyüzo H Higher Secondary School, Northfield Higher Secondary School and Bethel Higher Secondary School.

The seminar was led by Tsote-ü Wetsah, assistant teacher DBHSSK, which began with a prayer by Fr. PJ Varghese followed with a welcome speech by Fr. TP James, principal of DBHSSK.

The resource person of the event, Teisovi Gerard Meyase, professor of Mathematics at KSCJ, encouraged the participants to embrace the beauty of mathematics. He expressed his love for the subject and maintained that Maths should be seen not as a tool but as a creative work of art form.

He also emphasised on the fact that Mathematics is completely free of prejudice and that it unites all people.

It stated that the seminar-cum-competition witnessed the participants presenting their research, mathematical discoveries and innovative solutions to real-world problems and most importantly signifying the colossal importance of Mathematics.

The presentations were judged based on three criteria namely quality, clarity and the effective use of their visuals.

The judges were Lanukala I Jamir, reader of Mathematics at SCERT; Vemuri Vero and Niko Krome of Nagaland Science and Technology Council (NASTEC).

The vote of thanks was delivered by Meziwang Zeliang of NASTEC.

The seminar was organised by NASTEC and hosted by Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Kohima.

The event was catalysed and supported by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
