DIMAPUR — The Nagaland Tourism Association (NTA) has expressed its pride and joy at Kejaroko Pieru being named ‘Best Ecological Entrepreneur’ by The International Eco-Tourism Society (TIES) at the 3rd Eco-Tourism Awards.

Pieru is the founder and CEO of Pier Tours and president of the Nagaland Association of Tour Operators (NATO).

Pieru received the international recognition at the 18th International Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism Conference and B2B Networking Event in Luxor, Egypt, according to a press release from the NTA.

It stated that it is extremely proud of the recognition and achievement because it is the first of its kind, particularly in the field of tourism, where an entrepreneur from Nagaland and Northeast India is recognised at an international event.

While applauding the government’s and the tourism department’s efforts, the association maintained that, as stakeholders, it believes the government can do much more to promote tourism and that Nagaland has a lot of potential to become an ultimate eco-tourism destination.

“Tourism can really boost the local economy if the government can make the right policies and facilitate the stakeholders in the right way,” the release read.

However, it lamented that many tourism projects completed in the past are no longer being used and are no longer serving the purpose of tourism, and it urged the government to prioritise the development of more tourism-oriented projects, capacity building, awareness programmes, and the development of new destinations.

The association also requested that the concerned department assist stakeholders in marketing and publicity, attending fairs and conventions, and other activities that are essential in tourism, as in any other industry, to attract and draw more tourists to the state.
